"Life of Pai Pai"
2012-2026
So… you know how sometimes life just drops something right in front of you, and you don’t realize until later that it’s going to change everything?
That was Pai Pai.
He didn’t start life with much—just a story that could have gone in a very different direction.
We found him deep in the Grand Canyon at Havasupai Falls. He was this fragile, sick, exhausted little soul who wandered right into our campsite with a whole pack of stray dogs. They had no food, no shelter, and seemingly no one to love them. Honestly, Pai Pai was so obviously sick that it was heartbreaking just to look at him.
But somehow, it felt like he found us on purpose. Like the universe had brought us together. And from that moment on, everything changed—for him and for us.
We originally named him Supai, after the Native American village located about two miles from where we found him. But on our way out of the canyon, a woman from the village referred to him as a “Pai Pai dog,” and somehow, the nickname just stuck. Supai became Pai Pai.
He was so sick and weak that he could barely manage the two-mile walk from our campground back toward the village. And getting out of the canyon was no easy thing. It was going to be an eight-mile hike in the heat of July. Havasupai was incredibly remote, and the only ways in or out were by foot, mule, or the village’s weekly helicopter.
As luck—or maybe the universe—would have it, the helicopter was arriving that very day. So we paid $20 to give this little guy a ride with us back to the parking lot.
It was the beginning of a journey none of us could have imagined yet.
We brought him home thinking we’d help him heal and then find him a forever family. You can probably guess how that went. He had other plans.
Before long, he had completely settled in, made himself at home, and turned us into full-blown “foster failures.” And honestly, we didn’t fight it too hard.
When we were home in Grass Valley, he grew into the gentle center of our lively little world. He just… fit. Like he’d always been part of the family. Four dogs. Six cats. A dozen chickens.
Okay, the chickens took him a minute to figure out because, honestly, chickens are pretty weird little creatures. But Pai Pai rolled with it. He followed our lead, opened his heart, and loved everyone.
He became our steady travel companion, happiest on the open road with his two moms, breathing in the scent of pine forests and desert air. From quiet mornings by the fire to long days exploring new trails, he had a way of making every place feel like home simply by being there.
But make no mistake—his kindness had boundaries.
Raccoons? Absolutely not.
Deer? Also a hard no.
He took his job as head of security very seriously, patrolling our five acres like it was his personal mission and standing guard on the front porch like a seasoned professional. And the day he chased off coyotes that were eyeing our little dog? Yeah… that was the day he officially became my hero.
What defined Pai Pai most, though, was his love for people.
He gave it freely and without hesitation—to everyone, but especially to those who seemed to need it most.
Children found a steady, joyful friend in him. He greeted every visitor to our home and every stranger we passed on the street with the same warmth and gentle curiosity. Even people who were terrified of dogs somehow found a soft spot for Pai Pai.
And in his later years, he seemed to find his calling all on his own.
He started coming to work with me, and without anyone asking him to, he became a quiet source of comfort for seniors living with dementia. Every morning, he’d greet clients at the door, tail wagging, and then gently sit beside someone new, as if he somehow knew exactly who needed him that day.
No training. No prompting.
He just knew.
He had this incredible ability to meet people exactly where they were, with a calm, steady kind of love.
Pai Pai’s life wasn’t just a rescue story.
It was a story about trust. About connection. About second chances. About joy.
And in the end, he didn’t just find a home.
He made one. For us. And for everyone lucky enough to know him.
Our life will never be the same without our Pai Pai dog, but we are so incredibly grateful that we got to be a part of his life.
We rescued him thinking we were saving him. But the truth is, he rescued us right back.
We will always love you, handsome boy.
